A frigidarium was the cold room in a Roman bath complex, featuring a cold plunge pool where bathers would cool off after time spent in the warmer rooms, such as the tepidarium (warm room) and caldarium (hot room).
The frigidarium was designed to close the pores and invigorate the body, completing the bathing ritual that was both a cleansing and social activity in Roman culture.
The Baths of Caracalla in Rome had an extensive frigidarium, complete with a large cold pool that could accommodate many bathers at once. It was part of a larger complex that included gyms, libraries, and gardens.
