Paterfamilias

The paterfamilias was the male head of a Roman family, holding absolute authority over all family members, including his wife, children, and slaves. He had the legal power to make decisions on marriage, property, and discipline. This role embodied the Roman concept of authority and duty, maintaining family honor and traditions.

The paterfamilias could arrange marriages, manage family finances, and even disown or execute family members for serious offenses. In Roman literature, the figure of the paterfamilias is often portrayed as a symbol of moral authority and stability.
