A quaestor was a junior official in the Roman government responsible for financial and administrative tasks, such as managing public funds, overseeing military finances, and maintaining public records.

Quaestors were often the first step on the cursus honorum, the ladder of political offices leading to higher positions like consul or praetor.

Julius Caesar served as quaestor in Spain in 69 BC, managing the province’s finances and gaining valuable administrative and political experience that helped him rise to power later in his career.
