The Past

« Back to Glossary Index

The Past” refers to the totality of events that have occurred before the present moment. In historical studies, “the past” serves as the raw material from which historians craft narratives and interpretations.

However, it’s crucial to distinguish between “the past” and “history.” While “the past” is everything that has happened, “history” is our attempt to understand, narrate, and explain those events. This process is influenced by the historian’s perspective, the available sources, and the challenges of interpreting evidence across time.

The assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. is an event in “the past,” while the various interpretations and narratives about why it happened and its impact on the Roman Republic fall under “history.”
